The following are churches in Norman County,
or those that existed at one time. The churches are listed along with the community in
which they were located. Their present day name is indicated, when known or applicable.
This list is a work in progress and
corrections
and additions are appreciated. The cemeteries for these churches and burial sites not
associated with a specific church are listed by township.
Religious History of Norman County
The Red River Valley was at
one time called the �Bible Belt of the Northwest.�
The hardy pioneers that settled Norman County brought with them their
Bibles, hymns books, and prayer books. There were also pastors who served the
early communities though not called. It was not long until many churches were
built by the settlers, and as soon as they could, they secured pastors to lead
them. Many of these country churches have now been closed and the members have
joined other congregations, but there are still some rural churches left.
Ladies� Aid groups were
organized by the women largely for social reasons.
Their mission projects soon shifted the focus to a more religious
purpose. They visited, served lunch,
and had a form of devotion. Usually they had to walk with their younger children
to the home where the meeting was held because the horses were needed in the
field, so Ladies� Aid was an all-day affair.
Sunday school as we know it
was unknown in pioneer days. Parents would teach the catechism in the home and
in some places, the congregation would have two weeks to two months of parochial
school in the Norwegian language.
